About MeritCount

What exactly is MeritCount?

An online assessment tool for teachers at exams.meritcount.com. Quizzes are light and fast, with a scoreboard. Exams are the serious kind: camera, microphone, screen-sharing, full-screen and copy-paste checks, warnings that are counted, and a live view of the room. Both are built the same way, in four steps, and marked in the same place.

Is it a Kahoot replacement?

For the quick class quiz, yes: a code on the board, students on phones, results as they come in. The difference is that the same account, the same class roster and the same builder also run a proctored exam, so every result lives in one place.

Who is it for?

Teachers first: school teachers, coaching institute faculty and college lecturers. Schools can give teachers a sign-up code so everyone lands in the same place.

For students

What do students need?

For a quiz, any phone or laptop with a browser. For an exam with checks turned on, a laptop or desktop with a webcam and an up-to-date Chrome, Edge or Safari. Nothing to install.

Do students need an account?

Not for a quiz opened to anyone with the code: they type the code and their name at exams.meritcount.com/join. If a teacher adds a student to a class, the student gets an invite by email or a username and password from the teacher, and papers appear on their home screen.

What if the internet drops mid-exam?

Answers save themselves as the student types, and save again the moment the connection returns. If a laptop dies, the student signs back in and everything is there, including the correct time left. If they lose their place entirely, the teacher can send a link that puts them straight back in.

Can students see their own results?

When the teacher turns on Let students see their results. Until then they see nothing except the time they handed in and a PDF of their own answers.

Proctoring and privacy

Does exam mode stop cheating?

No tool can promise that, and we do not. What MeritCount does is make the session visible: leaving full screen, switching tabs and copy-paste attempts are counted and shown to the student as they happen, the teacher can watch any student live, and after too many warnings the paper is handed in automatically.

Is video recorded?

No. Watching the room is live only and is something the teacher switches on. Nothing from the camera, microphone or screen is recorded or kept, by MeritCount or by the teacher’s browser. What is kept is the record of flags: what happened and when.

What exactly is flagged?

Leaving full screen, switching tabs or windows, copy-paste attempts when blocking is on, and camera or screen sharing stopping. Each flag has a time. The flags appear in the teacher’s live view and in the PDF of the student’s paper.

Can students be watched without knowing?

No. A paper can only ask for camera or screen sharing if the teacher turned that check on, and the student is asked to allow each one before the paper opens. If they do not allow it, the paper does not open.

Where is data stored and who can see it?

Answers, marks and flags are visible to the teacher who ran the paper and to the student when results are released. Data is stored with our hosting providers; the details, including retention and your rights, are in the privacy policy.

Teachers, building and marking

Who marks written answers?

You do. Names are hidden by default. The AI can suggest a mark that fills the box; nothing is saved until you click.

Can I paste questions I already have?

Yes. Press Paste a paper on the Questions step. Put a * before the correct option, = before an accepted typed answer, and the marks in brackets. You see exactly what will be added before anything is saved.

Can the AI write questions for me?

Yes, from its own knowledge, from files in your library, from the internet, or from a video transcript. Drafts come back to you and you tick the ones to keep. Nothing the AI writes reaches a student on its own.

Can I reuse a paper next year?

Yes. Running a paper again never counts against your year. Only publishing a new paper counts.

How many questions can a paper hold?

Fifty. If you need more, make a second paper; your class can sit both.

Plans and accounts

How much does it cost?

Nothing for teachers, with 30 new papers in any rolling twelve months. Pro is $15 a month for unlimited papers, descriptive exams and questions from a video. Schools get a yearly quote.

How do I sign in?

At exams.meritcount.com/login, with Google or with email and password. Students who were invited sign in the same way; students joining an open quiz only need the code.

How do I contact support?

Email hello@meritcount.com, or use the contact page. Put "Exam" in the subject line if something went wrong during a paper and it goes to the front of the queue.
