How it works, start to finish

Every screen a teacher meets, in the order they meet it. The help centre has the same steps in more detail.

Details: name it, pick quiz or exam, pick a class

Making a paper is four steps in a straight line. Give it a title your class will recognise, choose Quiz or Exam, and choose a class, or leave it on No class so anyone with the code can join. Nothing is lost if you stop here; it stays a draft until you publish.

  • A quiz is light: no camera, results can show straight away
  • An exam turns on camera, full screen and copy-paste checks from the start
  • Drafts are only visible to you
  • One paper holds up to 50 questions

Questions: type them, paste them, or write them with AI

Four ways to fill a paper, and you can mix them. Tick-the-answer questions with 2 to 12 options. Short answers where you list every wording you will accept, so it marks itself. Written answers you mark yourself. Or paste last year’s paper and watch it split into questions, or ask the AI to draft questions from your own files, the internet or a video, and tick the ones to keep.

  • Multiple choice, short answer and written answer in one paper
  • Paste a paper: * marks the right option, = an accepted answer, [2] the marks
  • Write with AI from your library, the internet or a video transcript
  • Add a picture to any question, set marks, drag into order

Settings: who can join, when, and which checks are on

Every setting for a paper lives on one screen. Who can join: your class, named students, or anyone with the code. When: now, when you press Start, or a scheduled time. The checks: camera, microphone, screen sharing, full screen and copy-paste blocking. Warnings: warn a student after a chosen number of incidents and hand their paper in after too many. Plus shuffling, automatic marking, and whether students see their score at the end.

  • Checks are per paper; a quiz can have none, an exam can have all five
  • Warnings are counted and shown to the student when they happen
  • Shuffle question order and answer order so neighbours see different screens
  • Extra time is set once per student and applied to every paper they sit

Publish: a join code and a link

The last step lists what the paper is and what it will do, and names anything missing with a link to fix it. Press Publish and you get a six-character code and a link. Put the code on the board, or send the link by WhatsApp, email, Google Classroom or a QR code. If you chose a class or named students, they do not even need the code; the paper appears on their home screen.

  • Code on the board, or a link anywhere you like
  • Named students see the paper on their home screen
  • Publishing counts one paper against your year; running it again later does not
  • Anyone-with-code papers need no student account at all

Live: the whole room on one screen

Open the paper and press Live. You see how many are in the room, how many have handed in, how many need a look, and the time left. Each student has a card with their state, the question they are on and a progress bar. Flags list anything worth a look; students never see them. Press Watch the room and the cards fill with each student’s camera; click one to hear them and see their screen.

  • +5 min for one student, Let back in, Hand in now, Let them retake
  • Watching is something you switch on; nothing is recorded or kept
  • Room chat everyone sees, and you can hand out a file from your library
  • End session hands in anyone still writing

Marking and results: automatic where it can be, yours where it should be

Multiple choice and short answers are marked as they come in. For written answers press Start marking; names are hidden by default, because what an answer is worth has nothing to do with whose it is. The AI can suggest a mark that fills the box; nothing is saved until you click. When you are done, turn on Let students see their results.

  • Students see nothing until you release results
  • Excel downloads the class; any paper downloads as a PDF with the flag record
  • AI suggestions never save themselves
  • Override any automatic mark

Students and your library: set up once, use all year

The Students page is your roster, in classes. Add a student by emailing an invite, or have MeritCount make a login you hand out, for classes with no email addresses. Import a whole class from a pasted list. Each card shows an average and a tag when something needs you. Your library holds your own material in folders, ready for the AI to write from or for you to hand out during a paper.

  • Invite by email, or hand out a username and password
  • Extra time set once on the student
  • Tags for Below 50%, Slipping, and Invited but not joined
  • PDFs, decks, pictures and text files are AI-ready; Word and spreadsheets are not
